FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

 

The following is part of a talk by Ronnie Plant who in his 80th year is the author of several books including `Health is Wealth` an A-Z Encyclopaedia of over the counter natural remedies and good food.

If we wish to enjoy better health then number one is to adopt his motto `We are as we eat, drink sleep and exercise. ` Learn to be disciplined and positively practice these four things.  He added, `What we are offered as food and drink is foodless, non-sustaining having been put together in factories. Eat natural food without additives and preservatives. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and do not forget the humble potatoe.

               Breakfast is vital, laying the foundation in the morning for the first day of the rest of your life. Porridge cannot be bettered as a breakfast food. It is one of the two natural, off-the-shelf packaged breakfast cereals, with nothing added and nothing taken away. The other is Shredded Wheat which is slightly processed he admits. There must be over 80 branded breakfast cereals and all of them have additives including sugar. You can add fruit to porridge, bran or seeds such as sunflower, sesame. Linseed or pumpkin to the porridge. Sweeten if so desired by adding sultanas, raisins or currants which have been soaked overnight or use a spoonful or two of pure honey.

             Use meat, eggs or fish every third days as the base for main meal. Steam the vegetables. Grill or stew the meat. Grill, poach or steam the fish. Do not use tin foil or cling film ever. The frying pan is out as is frying.

             Wholemeal bread, plenty of raw onions, soft cheese make a wonderful sandwich-a meal in itself. Use Honey Roast Ham from the butcher instead of the cheese if you wish.

 

                                            SWEETNERS

 

Avoid anything with sugar or sweeteners. If you must sweeten, use pure honey. The use of sugar is one of the chief causes of ill-health. There should be a health warning on the packet. Today we use sixty times more sugar than was used over a century ago. This is why diabetes –for instance is endemic.

          Cooking oils or anything containing cooking oils are to be avoided. The oil is usually hydrogenated. At least we have it out in the open that hydrogenated oil is the cause of clogging up of oil and arteries, causing serious circulation problems, being detrimental to one’s health.

           Drink pure water- up to nine or ten glasses daily. Forget about fizzy and so called energy drinks. Many are full of sugar and contain harmful additives. The energy boost is very short-lived and the longing is there for more of the same all very unhealthy. The chemical bisphenol, a chemical used in the make up of plastic bottles is leaching into the liquids and is carcinogenic in other words Cancer forming like inhaled asbestos and tobacco smoke.

           Pure water is a thirst quencher and as already stated is one of nature’s greatest medicines, acting as a lubricant.

 

                                    SLEEP

 

A regular and proper sleep pattern with sufficient sleep is vital for all aspects of better health.

 

                                      EXERCISE

 

When exercise is mentioned, many cringe, almost wince, or to put it bluntly do not wish to know. This is foolish thinking. Walking costs nothing and Ronnie Plant walks 4-6 miles daily and that is not just a stroll. If the weather is very bad he uses an exercise bike. If you buy one it is money well spent.

He added which was a thought provoking statement, “We spend the first half of our lives harming the body and the second half trying to undo the damage.”

Hippocrates-the father of modern medicine laid down the dictum THAT FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE AND MEDICINE BE YOUR FOOD. Sometimes Doctors can only give us prescribed drugs. We should remember that our health is our own responsibility and that of no one else-not the Government, the Health Minister or the Health service.

 

Ronnie stated he receives daily telephone calls, emails and thank you cards after leaving aside chemical medications after following his advice. They have reported an amazing difference to their lives.
